Excellent analysis. I think we have used this text as part of our LDS version of “fire and brimstone” to try and subtly manipulate people into doing the right thing, rather than relying on the transformative power of Christ’s grace. I think it’s changing in the LDS community but we have a ways to go.

Thanks Nick! Along these lines, I’ve found it to be encouraging that some LDS scholars and thought-leaders are naming scrupulosity as a problem, and working toward alleviating that burden, yet without jettisoning a striving after morality and ethics.
